Glitters, feathers, and sequins

The Mummers' Parade is the America's oldest folk parade. To sum up Mummery for those who have never seen Mummers, it is a wildly festive celebration of the new year.

Some deride Mummery as an excuse for men to drink, prance around in drag, and urinate in public. (Only a few Mummers clubs allow women, though the Comics allow young daughters to participate.) Perhaps I have seen around them long enough to grow weary of them, because I just love watching the Mummers. Fancy costumes, fun, and the occasional biting satire: who could not love that? The Mummers also do a fair amount of charitable work, as well.

The most amazing thing about the Mummers is that thousands of ordinary people labor all year long to create incredibly intricate costumes and props in perfectly choreographed performances. They are not professionals. They have families and full-time jobs and general life responsibilities. They find the time, energy, and funds to work year-round to give the city a fantastic Jan 1.
May I join? :)
