sewing machine!

A neighbor gave me her old sewing machine before she moved. I'd like to try it! I've had these lovely Heather Bailey pre-cut quilt squares for more than a year and would love to do somethingwith them. The machine came with a large, heavy box of thread, zippers, and bobbins.

Bobbins. Don't know what they are, but they (1) sound sharp and (2) accordingly, will find their way into my fingers soon.

Any suggestions for how-to websites, books, etc.? My fine motor and spatial reasoning skills are non-existent. I could find a way to suffer serious bodily injury in a padded room. And, when it comes to anything artsy with the exception of photography, I have the attention span of a

oooh, something shiny over there!

Yes. So any advice for an extreme beginner who needs to avoid injury while stitching together a patchwork quilt?

a bobbin is the little round wheel that holds the thread to make the bottom stitch in a seam.. it couldn't cut you even if it wanted to..lol

wish you'd post a pic of the fabric AND the sewing machine :) oh yeah..and try pillows, they're wicked easy and really fun to make...

I know how to thread my machine and sew a sort of straight line. That's the only skill I need to hem pants and that sort of thing. But I do not know how to make a patchwork quilt! That sounds ambitious!

Kimber - pic coming. I actually hand-sewed a few pillowcases YEARS ago - they are wicked easy! Unfortunately, pillows are a big no in this house due to the dogs :(.

Mrs. C. Fabulous :(. I thought a quilt would be easy!

Allison: A quilt is easy. It's the only sewing I actually enjoy & unless you are really ambitious & are trying something like a *Drunkard's Path* all STRAIGHT seams!!!! ☺ The important bit is to make sure all your corners aligne; precision is paramount so go slowly at first. Pre~cut should have taken care of a lot of thr difficulties so it is then just a matter of making sure all your seams are the same width ~ which is important when you align your strips because all your corners are suppossed to match up. They often don't quite but closer is better. Enjoy. Quilting is fun.

I totally suck at sewing, but I'm still trying.

Did your machine come with its instruction booklet? If not, search for it online. You're seriously going to need that in order to learn how YOUR machine is threaded, etc.

I flipped through Martha Stewart's new Sewing Encyclopedia at the craft store last week. I NEED IT!!! It looks like it's pretty good for beginners. I also have some sewing books from thrift stores, like a Better Homes & Gardens Sewing Book from sometime in the 1960s. And the library is a good resource for books and possibly videos. YouTube may also have helpful videos.

Ganeida - patience with crafty endeavors is not my strong point. But it does look like fun. Hopefully the anticipation of a cheery new bedspread will keep me going.

Anne Marie - ok, I know how crafty you are, so if you find it tough I can only imagine what my experience will be. It is an older machine and didn't come with a manual but I'll do a little Googling. Thanks for reminding me about youtube - I never think of going there!

Ok, well with all THIS I feel like I have an obligation to start posting pics of my progress. Could be interesting. First up: getting it out of the car!

Allison, I find it intimidating because sewing just scares me for some reason. But also because I hate math and precision, and sewing often requires both of those. I was thinking that I'll never be a quilter after reading Ganeida's comment about lining everything up just right. It's a whole different type of crafting...
