I planted a few heads of lettuce in with my cucumbers last year. I tore up the soil in the planters on a very warm day in February, but evidently missed a few scattered seedlings. Five heads of lettuce popped up this week. We had a few very hot days this past week, and I hope the heat did not make the leaves bitter. I made the mistake of planting last year's lettuce in late July, and harvested only a few wilted, bitter heads - lettuce does best in cooler weather. Salad, anyone?
